Object Compare How to: Setup database schema connections
The Database Schemas Add-in supports database schemas accessible through a Microsoft
Data Link connection (OLEDB). Object Compare prompts you with the Microsoft Data
Link Properties dialog to define database connections to use in comparisons. These
connections are created using the Options dialog Add-ins tab page.
Connections for any OLE DB compliant database
To setup a database schema connection:
Open Object Compare, and select Tools -> Options from the main
menu.
In the Options dialog, select the Add-ins tab.
In the Add-ins tab, select Database Schemas from
the Add-ins drop down list.
Select the OleDbConnectionStrings settings and click the
... button to edit database connections.
In the DBSchemaConnection Collection Editor dialog, select the
Add button to create a new connection.
In the New Connection String Properties panel, enter a descriptive
name in the Name field for the new connection.
Select the ConnectionString setting and click the ...
button to open the Microsoft Data Link Properties dialog.
In the Data Link Properties dialog, select the OLE DB provider
to use for the connection and enter the connection information in the tab pages
provided.
Note:
If the connection requires a password, ensure the
Allow saving password option is checked in the Connection
tab.
Select the OK button to close the Data Link Properties
dialog.
In the DBSchemaConnection Collection Editor dialog, select the
OK button to close the dialog.
In the Options dialog, select the OK button to
save the connection configuration.
All database connections created using the Data Link Properties
dialog appear under the My Computer\Database Schemas object, using the
value of the Name setting to distinguish one connection from another.
Connections for Microsoft Access databases
In addition to supporting any OLEDB compliant database, the database schemas Add-in
also supports drill downs into Microsoft Access database files (*.mdb) without having
to set up a Data Link connection object. Using the Select Left/Right Side
dialog, simply navigate through the file system until you locate the Access database
file (*.mdb) of interest.
For Access database files that are password protected, you will need to set up a Data Link connection as outlined previously
to provide the password.
