Object Compare
How to: Compare two Registries |
Registries can be compared using the following methods outlined in this topic.
To compare Registry objects on the local computer:
- Open Object Compare, and select File -> Select Left Side from
the main menu.
- In the Select Left Side dialog, expand
the Desktop -> My Computer -> Registry objects.
- Locate the Registry object of interest by navigating through the Hive and Key hierarchy and select the OK button.
- On the main menu, select File -> Select Right Side.
- Repeat the steps for locating a Registry object outlined above using the Select Right Side dialog.
- To start the comparison, select File -> Start Comparison from
the main menu.
To compare Registry objects on remote computers:
- Open Object Compare, and select File -> Select Left Side from
the main menu.
- In the Select Left Side dialog, expand the Desktop ->
My Network Places -> <Network Path> -> <Remote Computer Name>
-> Registry
objects (Note:
the network resources name varies depending on the version of Windows you are using).
- Locate the Registry object of interest by navigating through the Hive and Key hierarchy on the nominated computer
and select the OK button.
- On the main menu, select File -> Select Right Side.
- Repeat the steps for locating a Registry object outlined above using the Select
Right Side dialog.
- To start the comparison, select File -> Start Comparison from
the main menu.
Comparing entire Registries between local or remote machines is better handled by
the File Viewer using .reg files. The above techniques are more suited to comparing
subsets of Registries.
